First played in 1873 in Gloucestershire, England, the roots of the sport can be traced to ancient Greece, China and

India, and it is closely related to the old children’s game battledore and shuttlecock. In Australia, badminton was first played as early as 1874 with the first key competitive clubs established in the 1900’s and from then it became a popular pastime. Since first being recognised as an Olympic sport at the Barcelona Games in 1992, Australia has had 31 badminton Olympians in a sport that continues to grow in popularity and competitive recognition.
